During a Chehalis Basin Partnership (Partnership) workshop on July 13, participants will begin examining common goal(s), mission statement(s), vision(s) and priorities as identified during interviews between Partnership members and the consultant, Triangle Associates, Inc. Additionally the workshop will allow for a facilitated discussion that focuses on producing the outline for the Watershed Management Plan
The Partnership includes representatives of counties, cities, water districts, tribes, citizens and other interested parties who came together in 1997 to coordinate efforts to manage natural resources. Under the Watershed Management Act (Chapter 90.982 RCW), the Partnership is charged with agreeing to a plan to assess how much water is available in the basin and propose strategies for managing these water resources. With some sub-basins closed to the issuance of new water rights and concern about availability of water for fish and other wildlife as well as for economic development, the legislature assigned the task of planning for water management to local interests. The plan agreed to by the Partnership must be submitted to the counties for approval by August 2003.
The Partnership contracted with Triangle Associates to help put together an outline or table of contents for the plan. During the July 13th workshop, participants will have a chance to influence the development of that outline and begin to determine what will be the recommended priorities. Participation in the workshop is encouraged. The workshop is July 13, 2001, at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Oakville from 9 AM to 12:00 (or until the group decides to adjourn).
The Chehalis Basin includes all the land through which water eventually flows into the Chehalis River and Grays Harbor. Lewis, Thurston, Grays Harbor, and Mason counties participate in the Partnership along with tribes, citizens, state agencies, and representatives of various cities and towns in the Basin. The Chehalis Basin Partnership regularly meets the fourth Friday of the month from 9:00 to 11:30 AM at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Oakville. The next regular meeting is July 27. The public is welcome to attend all meetings of the Partnership. For information, call Lee Hansmann, Grays Harbor County deputy director of community development, at (360) 249-4222.
