Chehalis Basin Ecosystem Restoration Study

A 4-year, 5 million dollar feasibility study to determine existing and historical conditions within the Basin, and determine the possibility of restoring the natural processes of the Basin so flooding frequency and duration, fish and wildlife habitat, and water quality conditions can be improved. Up to 30 different project alternatives may be selected that will achieve these goals. In addition to the study, we will identify projects currently ready for construction that can be implemented through local, state and/or Federal funding prior to the completion of the feasibility study. This will provide early positive results for the overall ecosystem health of the Basin and model projects to use as references for future use. The Project Manager for this study is Lori Morris at the Corps. The local sponsor is Grays Harbor County.

Centralia Flood Damage Reduction Study

The cities of Centralia and Chehalis have been subject to repeated flooding for many years. This flooding has caused extensive damage to private and public property and periodic closure of critical transportation routes resulting in significant economic losses. The project benefits include reduction of flooding for Centralia and Chehalis, protection of I -5 and railways, and environmental restoration. The current focus of the Centralia Flood Damage Reduction project is to complete the General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 2002 consideration. A General Reevaluation Report (GRR) and EIS will be prepared to evaluate the alternatives along with other appropriate flood damage reduction alternatives to determine a recommended project configuration. Currently the project delivery team is finalizing current conditions and beginning the alternative selection process. In FY 2002 the team will select an alternative, complete and finalize the GRR/EIS. The current alternatives encompass, among other things levees, flow bypass with an over bank excavation, modifications to the Skookumchuck Dam and nonstructural actions. The Project Manager for this study is Beth Coffey at the Corps. The local sponsor is Lewis County.
