Chehalis Basin Partnership Citizens Advisory Committee

Meeting Summary

February 22, 2002

Attendance: CAC members Rob Schanz, Margaret Rader, Earl Emerson, Lyle

Hojem, Terry Willis, Jay Roach. Guests: Janet Strong, Chanelle Holbrook,

Pete Holm

General Discussion : We discussed the new flood reduction alternative that the Corps of Engineers is proposing for Centralia-Chehalis. We also discussed the proposed gas pipeline that cuts across the Black River. Jay has developed signs describing the "Olympic Island", to publicize the idea that the channel at the north end of Black Lake makes everything north of the Chehalis River on the Olympic Peninsula an "island". He is proposing listing the CBP CAC as one of the sponsors of the sign. There was no objection to this idea, but Margaret will check the sign to make sure it is appropriate.

Study Area Meetings: The next study area meeting is in Ocean Shores on Feb. 26. Set up will begin at 4:00, and the meeting starts at 5:00. There have been notices in various media, and a notice went out with utility bills. Margaret has been working with Dave Rountry to develop the water quality display. Other displays include water quantity, fish habitat, and general watershed planning. Jay will try to bring a person from DNR to demonstrate the Mapping CD developed for the lower Chehalis watershed.

Public Participation Plan: CAC members wanted more time to review the draft prepared by Chris Page. Rob will check with Chris to make sure everyone got a copy. We will then vote on recommending the plan to the CBP at our next meeting.

Next Meeting: The next CAC meeting will be on Tuesday March 19th at 3:00 at the Montesano City Hall meeting room. The March study area meeting will occur at the same location later that afternoon/evening. Terry will make sure the City Hall meeting room is available at that time. Agenda includes discussing how the Ocean Shores meeting went, and final approval of the public involvement plan.

Rob Schanz

Chair, CBP CAC
