CHEHALIS WATERSHED VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP CHEHALIS

OAKVILLE, June 1, 2000 - Local Chehalis River area residents will wade into the Chehalis this month as part of campaign to clean and preserve Chehalis Watershed rivers and streams, organizers announced.

Volunteers will stage their cleanup starting at noon on Saturday June 17, at the Rainbow Falls State ParkClick here for cleanup map. They will be part of a National River Cleanup Week which is conducted nationally June 3 - 10.

"This year we are poised between two centuries. This is a good time to cleanup past practices and enjoy the future," said Dave Palmer, Chehalis River Council Chairman. "We are pleased that Lewis County Public Works and Health and Social Services are cosponsors of this event and will provide litter bags and will pick up and dispose of full bags."

During the 4 hour cleanup, participants will collect trash and other debris along the Chehalis. During last year's National River Cleanup Week, more than 30,000 volunteers nationally removed trash, garbage and miscellaneous items, including refrigerators and shopping carts, from the nation's waterways.

"This is a perfect opportunity for local residents to make a valuable contribution to help keep our waterways clean," says Rob Schanz, area resident and Chehalis River Council Board Secretary. "Litter is not only unsightly and potentially hazardous to the people who boat, swim and fish in these waters, but it also poses a threat to the wildlife populations that depend on these waterways."

The cleanup effort will conclude with a potluck picnic at Rainbow Falls State Park. For more information or to volunteer for the Chehalis cleanup, contact Rob Schanz at 360-291-3725 or the CRC office at 360/273-6137.
