River Cleanup Fun and Successful.

Volunteers from Olympia, Onalaska, Oakville, Rochester and the Doty - Pe Ell area collected piles of stream side trash.

This Cleanup, sponsored by the Chehalis River Council and Lewis County Department of Public works took place along the Chehalis River in the Rainbow Falls State Park and River Road areas in Lewis County.

Over a dozen adults and children volunteers tramped along the river side.

Two of the most intriguing articles found were a child's bicycle and a car door.

The child's bicycle required a lot of human effort and the help of a rope and pulley.

Beer cans, pop cans, beer bottles, tires, 50 gallon barrel parts were just some of the items removed.

Rob Schanz, area resident and Chehalis River Council Board Secretary, called the effort a success and said "Litter is not only unsightly and potentially hazardous to the people who boat, swim and fish in these waters, but it also poses a threat to the wildlife populations that depend on these waterways."

Lewis County Department of Public Works aided the effort by providing bags, gloves, signs, hard hats and will pickup the truckload that was found by the volunteers.
