Aberdeen council may join Shorelines Act suit against DOE

When the Aberdeen City Council meets Wednesday night it is expected to vote on whether or not to join the Association of Washington Businesses and local municipalities in an appeal of the new Shorelines Management Act regulations proposed by the Department of Ecology.

Grays Harbor County is part of the suit and County Commissioner Dennis Morrisette was at last Wednesday's council meeting asking Aberdeen for support.

Morrisette said the city, along with all coastal communities, could be damaged severely by the impact of the regulations. He said that if Aberdeen joins the lawsuit it will help send a message that rural communities are united against the new regulations.

"We want to add as many municipalities as we can to send a message to the state Legislature and the Department of Ecology that we are serious about this and it needs their immediate attention," Morrisette said. "The more municipalities that join, the bigger voice we have."

Others have already joined

Others that have joined in the appeal are Grays Harbor County, Pacific County, the cities of Westport, Ocean Shores and Hoquiam, the Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Grays Harbor Economic Development Council and the Port of Grays Harbor.

The City Council is expected to vote on the matter during its regular meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall.
