SEATTLE: Environmental and flood control information for the Chehalis River Basin is now available on the Internet. Army Corps of Engineers' web site,
(Select the following to go to:) http://www.nws.usace.army.mil , will take you directly to the latest news about the Seattle District, Army Corps of Engineers. Once there, scroll down to "Links of Interest" and select either Chehalis River Basin Ecosystem Restoration Study or Centralia Flood Damage Reduction Project for the latest news about the projects. Confusion over the two prompted a commitment by Corps management to enhance outreach to the local community.

"Recognizing the need for clarification and a desire to serve the local community are the reasons the Corps stepped up to the plate and designated mass communications resources for these two projects", said Leslie Kaye, spokesperson for the Corps.

The information provided on the web pages describes the difference between the current study going on in the basin-wide region, and the long-term flood damage reduction project centered in the Centralia-Chehalis areas.

The Chehalis River Basin Ecosystem Restoration Study sponsored by Grays Harbor County (
(Select the following to go to:) http://www.nws.usace.army.mil/pm/chehalis/ ) will study ecosystem restoration and environmental impact issues for the entire Chehalis Basin region. It is in the early stages of project formulation.

The Centralia Flood Damage Reduction Project sponsored by Lewis County ( (Select the following to go to:) http://www.nws.usace.army.mil/pm/centralia/ ) will research and investigate solutions for flood damage reduction in the Chehalis/Centralia population centers. Currently there are seven possible alternatives that the Corps has determined. At a future point the information between the two will be shared. Both have an over-arching goal of flood damage reduction.

The public has a variety of links available on the pages. Accessing project updates, study and project backgrounds, detailed reports, and direct email links to project managers, are just a few. A "Contacting Us" page enables a citizen to contact the Corps directly with concerns.
