Chehalis approves new sewage-treatment rate

The Chehalis City Council Monday approved an ordinance that will raise monthly sewage-treatment rates for Napavine residents and lower rates for Lewis County Sewer District 1.

The new rates become effective Jan. 1, 2002.

The city of Chehalis will charge Napavine residents a total of $6 513 per month in 2002, an increase of @most 24 percent from 2001. The Lewis County Sewer District I will have to pay $3,497 per month during 2002, a decrease of about 7 percent from 2001.

Lewis County and the city of Napavine must also approve the new rates, said Patrick Wiltzius, Chehalis' wastewater superintendent.

Single-family residential sewer charges will include a capital improvement rate and a sewer use charge, according to the ordinance.

The capital improvement rate will be $25.90 per month during 2002 for residences within city limits, and $38.84 per month for those outside city limits.

The residential sewer use charge for 2002, based on the volume of water used during winter and averaged for the summer months, will be $3.14 per 100 cubic feet per month for residences within city limits, and $3.36 per 100 cubic feet per month for those outside city limits.

For low-income senior citizen customers and customers the Social Security Administration defines as "totally disabled," the monthly capital improvement charge during 2002 will be $18.52 for those within city limits, and $27.77 for those outside city limits.

For commercial customers, the 2002 capital improvement rate inside city limits will vary depending on the size of the service, from $35.42 per month for those with 1/8 inches by 1/4 inches to $561.09 per month for those with 8 inches.

For commercial customers outside city limits, the capital improvement rate will be from $53.14 per month for 5/8 inches by 3/4 ,inches to $841.63 per month for 8 inches.

The 2002 monthly use charge for commercial customers will be $3.14 per 100 cubic feet inside city limits, and $3.36 per I 00 cubic feet outside city limits.

Industrial customers will be charged $3,300 per I million gallons per month during 2002, plus 27 cents per pound of biochemical oxygen demand per month and 39 cents per pound of BOD suspended solids per month.
