FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Feb. 4, 2002 02-017 Westport fish processor fined for failing to protect water quality OLYMPIA - Merino's Seafood, Inc. in Westport has been fined by the state for failing to protect water quality in Grays Harbor. In issuing a $55,800 fine, the state Department of Ecology (Ecology) cited the fish processor's numerous failures to meet the requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. Among its violations, the seafood processor submitted 10 monthly water quality monitoring reports as much as five months late. "We cannot fix pollution problems early unless we receive timely test results. This information helps us protect Grays Harbor from pollution," said Megan White, who manages Ecology's water-quality program. In addition, the firm was cited for failing to prevent fecal coliform bacteria from being discharged into the harbor. The problem likely stems from seagulls that are attracted to the seafood processor's operations. White noted that this penalty is not the first for Merino's Seafood, Inc. In 1997, the state collected $42,000 from the firm for many of the same violations. A portion of that penalty amount went toward a project to extend a wastewater discharge pipe farther into the harbor. "Other fish processors are complying with their permits. We believe there is no reason why Merino's can't, too," White said. The company may file an application for relief from the penalty with Ecology within 15 days and/or may file an appeal within 30 days with the state Pollution Control Hearings Board.
