Centralia City Council approves interlocal flood control agreements

By Paul Alleva, The Chronicle, 5/15/2002

The Centralia City Council Tuesday night approved the interlocal agreements among Chehalis, Centralia and Lewis County that will ensure the Chehalis River Flood Control Project continues so that Congress may consider including it in the 2002 Water Resources Development Act, a blueprint for projects the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will undertake nationwide.

ACCORDING to information included in the council's agenda packet, one of these agreements commits the city of Centralia to reimbursing Lewis County $216,666 for work already completed on the project if $650,000 in funding does not come from the Washington Department of Transportation by June 30.

The other agreement commits the city to reimbursing the county $133,333 for work that must be completed before the end of 2002 so the Corps can receive a contingent authorization in the Water Resources Development Act. The city will reimburse the county this amount if state or federal funding has not been found by Dec. 3 I.

If Congress includes the Chehalis River Flood Control Project in the 2002 WRDA bill, the Corps will be able to carry out its plan to build protective dikes around the Twin Cities and improve the Skookumchuck Dam so it can hold back more water.
