Open house: Local, state and federal experts will answer questions, listen to concerns
By Brian MIttge, The Chronicle, 5/21/2002
Officials involved with local flood control efforts will answer questions and listen to public concerns tonight at an open house in the Chehalis Middle School from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event includes free pizza and child care.
The Chehalis Basin Partnership is sponsoring the event, which focuses on the Chehalis River south of the Lewis-Thurston county line, including the Skookumchuck and Newaukum rivers and creeks that drain into the Chehalis River.
Discussions will include such topics as whether there is too much or not enough water, and whether it goes to humans or fish, according to organizers.
''Have a say in your future with this chance to tell government what you think,'' promotional materials state.
The schedule includes an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. with listening posts staffed by representatives of the Chehalis Basin Partnership, Department of Ecology, Army Corps of Engineers, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Department of Natural Resources.
A watershed planning presentation is scheduled from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
The open house continues from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and includes ''fun and educational activities,'' organizers say.
Information will also be provided on current flood control planning efforts, which include a system of dikes and levees around the Twin Cities, raising the Skookumchuck Dam and possibly excavating beneath the Mellen Street bridge and state Route 6 between Chehalis and Claquato.
The event will be held at 1060 S.W. 20th St. in Chehalis.
