Flood damage reduction project overview meeting in Montesano offers opportunity for understanding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Contact: Leslie Kaye (206) 764-3751 June 7, 2002

SEATTLE: Flood control, the area's hottest issue, will be the topic when citizens gather on June 13 in the Chehalis River Basin at the Montesano City Hall. All are encouraged to attend a panel discussion and open house evening meeting sponsored by the Seattle District, Army Corps of Engineers, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. where the recently selected flood damage reduction solution will be presented. The solution offers environmentally sensitive set-back levees as the primary answer to protecting communities from a 100-year flood event. Addressing concerns specific to the Montesano public about downstream effects will be the secondary focus of the meeting.

Experts from the Corps and Lewis County will be on hand to present a project overview and to answer questions on environmental impact, water issues, level of protection, cost estimate and geographical areas of concern. This meeting is one of two opportunites this summer for the public to research and analyze the proposed solution to the flood problem. Due to public input the official comment hearing originally scheduled for July will now be held in August. This will give the citizens and community groups further opportunity to review the Draft Environmental Impact Statement due out in mid-July.

The July 9 meeting in Chehalis at the Lewis County Courthouse from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. will focus exclusively on the selected alternative for the Centralia Flood Damage Reduction project. Maps, displays and exhibits will show affected areas and engineering experts will once again be available to answer questions. This will be the final chance for the community to get a project overview before the official comment period.

Please monitor local media for the date, time and location of the August official comment public hearing.
