FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Aug. 22, 2002

Funding assistance still available for water-measuring devices

OLYMPIA - Fewer than 20 funding applications have so far trickled in from water-right holders who need to install water-measuring devices under compliance orders issued by the Department of Ecology.

Some $3.4 million in cost-share funds was set aside by the state Legislature to help major water users in 16 fish-critical basins pay for the devices needed to measure how much water they are using. Eligible candidates can receive up to $50,000 to purchase, install and calibrate new water-measuring devices.

We have already issued about half the compliance orders but have received only around $30,000 in application requests, said Ken Schuster, who oversees Ecologys water-measuring program. We hope more people take advantage of the funding because the money runs out after June 2003.

Most requests to date have averaged about $1,500 each and Schuster said many water-right holders may be waiting for this years agricultural season to end before seeking to install measuring devices.

More than 500 orders have been sent to farms, irrigation districts, municipalities and other top water users to measure and make periodic reports about their water use to Ecology.

The directives are the result of a 2001 court order issued by the Thurston Co. Superior Court. A third batch of orders will go out in late September.

By the end of December, about 1,000 water-right holders will have received water-measurement orders.

The top water users operating in the following basins have been receiving water-measuring orders:

Western Washington

Cedar-Sammamish Chambers-Clover Duwamish-Green Elwha-Dungeness Nooksack Puyallup-White Quilcene-Snow Snohomish

Eastern Washington

Lower Yakima Methow Middle Snake Naches Okanogan Upper Yakima Walla Walla Wenatchee
