Contaminated Chehalis site listed for cleanup

By The Chronicle,Saturday, March 08, 2003

A Chehalis property has been listed on the Washington Department of Ecology's contaminated sites list, but is listed at the level reflecting the lowest risk to the public or environment.

The site, at 1200 Maryland Ave., has petroleum contamination in the soil, according to DOE spokeswoman Caitlin Cormier. The site had been cleaned in 1996, but more contaminated soil was found last year, she said.

"There's not any worry that someone working at the site is going to be exposed to any contamination," she said.

The current owner of the property has nothing to do with the contamination, she said.

The DOE spokeswoman also said the responsible party has been identified, and will need to pay for cleanup.
