Heavy rains have spilled partially treated sewage from a pipe under repair into the Chehalis River since Sunday, according to the Chehalis Public Works Department.
Exposure to the spilled sewage could cause diarrhea, nausea, cramping and vomiting, the Lewis County Health Department says.
The public should not drink water taken directly from the river or from shallow wells adjacent to the river without first boiling it for 10 minutes. Water with sediment should be strained through a cloth or paper filter and then boiled. Avoid contact with river water or items that have been in contact with the water, the agency advised.
The city expects to fix the pipe this week, but rains could cause more spills, according to public works.
