OUR VIEWS, The Chronicle, 5/18/98
County government has taken the lead in a campaign to identify, research, approve and fund projects to avert disastrous flooding of the sort that's devastated the Twin Cities in recent years. Support from other local governments is essential to provide a united front in securing money to pay for the projects, such as from the state Department of Transportation, which would benefit by not having to raise Interstate 5 through the Twin Cities.
Centralia City Manager Tom Reber sums up well what's at stake: "There's nothing we could do with more impact on the community than resolve flooding." In fact, the very economic survival of the area depends on flood control.
It's great to see the three local governments working together on this goal so that, finally, something effective is done about flooding.
