Now that the rainy season is over, city residents are using water faster than nature is resupplying it, says Centralia Utilities Director Dick Southworth.
Southworth is asking customers to voluntarily implement conservation measures to reduce residential water usage during the dry, warm summer months.
Customers with even-numbered street addresses are requested to water their gardens and lawns on even-numbered days only. Residents with odd-numbered addresses should water on odd-numbered days.
Southworth said the odd-even approach is intended to reduce peak usage by spreading consumption more evenly over a period of time.
Water customers also are requested to restrict nonessential water usage.
Water-saving tips and free water conservation kits are available at the Utilities Department, 1401 W. Mellen St. Weekday office hours are 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
