All interested citizens are encouraged to attend the second of three meetings that have been scheduled in July and August for the Ocean Shores Coastline Erosion environmental review process. It will be held on Thursday evening, August 6, at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. An open house from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM will precede the meeting that will begin at 6:00 PM and conclude at 9:00 PM.

This environmental review process will result in the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement or EIS that will identify a long-term solution to the Ocean Shores coastline erosion problem.

The August 6 meeting has three purposes. The first is to describe the goals and objectives for the EIS process, that is, what the EIS is intended to accomplish. The second is to describe the specific criteria and methodology that will be used to measure the alternatives. The third is to give interested citizens an opportunity to indicate their preferences among the goals and objectives; the results will be presented to the Interagency Policy Coordination Committee and the Technical Advisory Committee that have been created to work with the project team throughout the EIS process.

The third in this series of meetings will be held on Wednesday, August 26, also at that Convention Center, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The purpose of this meeting will be to describe the alternatives that have been identified to date and to provide an opportunity for additional alternatives to be proposed. Again, an open house from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM will precede the meeting.

This series of meetings is intended to create a common base of information about the EIS process and the particular issues to be addressed at Ocean Shores so that interested citizens can meaningfully participate in the EIS process as it proceeds.

Following this series of meetings, the formal process by which the issues to be addressed in the Draft EIS will be identified - this is known as "scoping" the EIS - will begin. During the "scoping" period, a public meeting will be scheduled for interested citizens to identify issues to be considered; written scoping comments may also be submitted. More information about participating in scoping - whether through participation in a meeting or in writing -- will be provided well in advance.

Over the coming months, frequent press releases will provide additional information about the EIS process and opportunities for public involvement. For those with access to the internet, background information and materials prepared as part of the EIS process are now available electronically at the following address: www.ocean-shores-erosion.com or by clicking here: Ocean Shores Erosion
