OLYMPIA - Responding to public outcry, Thurston County commissioners have scuttled a plan to levy new fees on septic systems and expand stormwater programs
Commissioners have advised county planners to drop consideration of the proposed Water Resources Management General Plan
About 300 residents stormed the county courthouse last month to condemn the proposal during a public hearing
The message was received, County Commission chairman Dick Nichols said Tuesday
"In our system of government, we need to be responsive to the people," Nichols said. "We need to listen to the people when they are this opposed to something." County activist Michael Pettit, who organized opposition to the proposal, said he was pleased with the commissioners' move to pull the plan
"The real winner here is the public," Pettit said
