Brownfields are abandoned, urban properties that are contaminated from past industrial or commercial practices. They're usually near city centers and waterfront areas, and they're usually facilities that can be reused.
Ecology is looking for ways to get the word out about brownfields resources/options available to the public. For instance, did you know there are grants, low interest loans and tax incentives available for brownfields redevelopment? Just last year, Ecology awarded King County a remedial action grant totaling over one million dollars to clean up and redevelop a former sewage treatment plant. There are legal mechanisms, called prospective purchaser consent decrees, which can settle your liability for cleanup costs - if you decide to purchase and redevelop a brownfields site.
Although we have brownfields resource guides available, we're looking for other ways to inform the public. How should we go about doing this? Do you have ideas?
. Maybe you have other ideas. In any case, we want to hear from you.
