Saddle up for Water Quality and Earth Day

Enjoy Earth Day for Horseowners with Horses for Clean Water!

On Earth Day, Saturday April 24th from 9am to 3pm Horses for Clean Water will feature a FIVE farm tour of environmentally-sensitive demonstration horse farms and an Open House on resources for horseowners in Hobart, WA.

Tour small horse farms that don t have mud problems, even in the winter.

They have manure management systems which recycle manure and good pastures for their horses to enjoy during the summer. Birds are used as natural insect control. Trees and wildlife grace their farms. These techniques offer win-win solutions for the horses, the farm AND the environment!

The farm tour portion will begin at an Open House held at the Hobart Community Church on the corner of 200th and the Issaquah-Hobart Road. At the church there will be displays, booths and resource folks -- as well as a used tack sale and a 4-H bake sale. Talk to resource professionals and pick up info on the organizations, programs and resources available to you as a King County land and horse owner -- including info on the new King County Livestock Management Ordinance, the King County Noxious Weed Control Program, the Public Benefit Rating System, King Conservation District programs, Rainier Audubon bird boxes and wildlife info, Backcountry Horseman of Washington, King County Executive Horse Council and much, much more! Outside will be even be a live demonstration of Leave No Trace backcountry packing.

Open House hours are from 9am to 3pm -- drop by to check it out!

Then tour 5 horse farms in Hobart. King County DNR will provide shuttle service, leaving the Hobart Church every 30 minutes from 9am until 12:30pm on a 2.5 hour trip. Cost for the event is $3 per adult. Please register by contacting program director Alayne Blickle at 425-432-6116 or by email at ARBlickle@aol.com. Programs are open to anyone and you don t need to own horses or have a farm to attend. For information on Horses for Clean Water check out the website at http://members.aol.com/arblickle.

All farm tour participants receive a FREE Douglas Fir tree! Also, free notebooks will be available for 1998 & 1999 participants from the Horse Farm Management series. Discount coupons from areas businesses will be given away.
