Flood Meeting

The Washington State Department of Transportation, in support of a recommendation of the Chehalis Alternatives Subcommittee, will be hosting a flood hazard mapping workshop to identify flood related impacts in the Upper and Lower Chehalis River Basins on June 8th 1999.

The workshop will be held from 8:30-12:00 at the Centralia City Hall in the City of Centralia. The workshop will focus on collecting information on the following four specific topics:

Flood related damage including costs, locations, type of impacts, frequency and/or date of impacts.

Potential flood storage and conveyance areas.

Locations of potential damage due to increasing flood water conveyance.

Locations where flood reduction strategies can be used to enhance or restore degraded habitat; e.g. provide side channel rearing habitat for salmonids.

Attendees will participate in creating a Geographical Information System (GIS) database for the Upper and Lower Chehalis River basins by drawing the locations of the focus topics on maps. The databases will be used to identify flood hazard impacts that need to be considered in flood hazard reduction activities, potential flood storage and conveyance sites, potential project partnerships for a watershed-scale flood mitigation strategy and prioritization of flood reduction planning and mitigation efforts. Users of the information will include federal and state agencies, tribes, counties, cities, and citizen groups involved with floodplain management, community planning, watershed planning, fish recovery, and other related activities.

The agenda, pre-workshop preparatory materials and driving instructions will be forthcoming. To help us provide sufficient materials for the workshop, please pre-register by contacting:
