Engineering firm to make presentation at Bucoda public hearing Oct. 26 on new water

BUCODA - The Bucoda Town Council has scheduled a public hearing Oct. 26 to discuss a new water delivery system for much of the town.
The hearing will precede the council's regular meeting date. Citizens are urged to attend a presentation by the engineering firm of Gray and Osborne. Expected at the meeting will be explanations to the project's scope and cost, and grants that might be tapped to pay for the new system.
The hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m., Mayor Dennis McWhinney told councilors Tuesday evening.
On another water-related subject, town officials have decided to confront the Thurston County Department of Health over notification that Bucoda has until April to come up with a treatment system to eliminate traces of copper and lead within some town Residences.
"I object to them telling us this on the basis of five homes that failed a test," McWhinney said. "They tell us we will have to either hire a consultant or have them tell us the best way to approach this. It is going to be very expensive either way and they offer no compensation."
The council voted to have McWhinney approach the health department on the town's behalf.
In other business, McWhinney said he has been talking with Skookumchuck Electric of Tenino about wiring the town's proposed recreational vehicle park.
He said he had hoped Skookumchuck could design the system and that locals could implement it. But he was told the system would have to be professionally installed.
Also, City Clerk GeeGee Clark noted about 30 young cotton blossom trees have been delivered and planted along sidewalks in south Bucoda.
