CORPS HABITAT RESTORATION CONFERENCE

American Rivers and the Corps of Engineers hosted a one-day conference on Corps of Engineers habitat restoration in Nebraska City, NE. Following Corps presentations on completed projects, members of American Rivers Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee and conference participants offered the following comments:

The Corps should integrate ecological goals into all project planning, including navigation and flood control projects

The Corps should draw a distinction between restoration and mitigation

Monitoring should be built in restoration and mitigation projects

The Corps should develop projects within the context of watersheds and ecological systems

The Corps should broaden its base of cost-sharing partners and seek the input of more local stakeholders

The Corps should incorporate existence values into their assessment of project benefits and costs
