It is only the first fullweek in September and the weather is beautiful. BUT, already we have lost our electrical power for an extended period and then towards the end of the week our telephone service has been out for over 2 full days.

Fortunately the weather is nice and everything seems peaceful, but - in the middle of a winter storm or during a time when the rivers are rising this might have been a terrifying experience.

So here are some things to think about....

If the power goes out - do you have

• radio with batteries
• candles - with matches?
• flashlights with fully charged batteries?
• lanterns - with a tank of fuel and matches?
• a generator with a tank of good fuel?
• a DC to AC inverter and a fully charged battery?
• a well for water and 3 days backup supply on hand?
• medical equipment with a manual backup method?
• backup gasoline sump or flood pumps?
• a traditional (not wireless) telephone that works

Have you tested your

• radio
• candles
• flashlights
• lanterns
• generator
• inverter
• bottled water
• medical procedures
• gasoline powered pumps

If the telephone goes out do you have

• a backup CB radio that works
• access to neighbors with telephones
• access to a cell phone
• access to reliable emergency information when the internet isn't available
• a fail safe plan to reach your immediate family, relatives and neighbors
