It seems that years of effort are taking a new turn as Lewis County and the City of Chehalis deal with new big box development in areas surrounded by random and unpredicatable flood waters.

  •  Feb. 13, 2004 The Chronicle reports thatCentralia and Chehalis city councilors and county Commissioner Richard Graham plan to fly to Washington, D.C., next month to push for federal funding and approval of an $80 million to $100 million project to improve the Skookumchuck Dam, and to surround the Twin Cities with protective levees.

    1.  Jul. 11, 2002 The Chronicle reports: Army Corps of Engineers officials presented their plan to reduce flood damage to Interstate 5 and the Twin Cities Tuesday night at the Lewis County Courthouse in Chehalis.
    2.  Jul. 09, 2002 Here is an aerial view of the proposed levee solution to safeguard Centralia and Chehalis properties during the next 100 year flood.
  •  Oct. 06, 2003 What will be the modifications to the Skookumchuck dam, where will the dikes go, who will run the dike districts, what will the taxpayers pay - these are some of the questions that Lewis County Commissioners hope their $2 million contract with PIE will now start to answer.   •  Sep. 18, 2003 Hmmmm, The Chronicle reports that flood work 'difficult' to fit in with DOT plan to be extremely accountable with money.
  •  Sep. 12, 2003 The Chronicle reports that work to elevate Anderson Road above the floodplain is on schedule and casino patrons won't be inconvenienced much longer. Some local flood victims wonder about this BIA prooject.
  •  Jul. 11, 2003 The Federal Emergency Management Agency released new maps Wednesday night that more accurately show the nuances of flooding around the Newaukum River, including the fast-growing development at Exit 72.
  •  May. 10, 2003 chronine on May 9 reports that "flood control effort gets a shot in the arm. "
  •  Apr. 13, 2003 The Chronicle reports that the future of flood control and Interstate 5 expansion in the Twin Cities area could be decided by a brewing battle over transportation plans in Olympia.
  •  Apr. 01, 2003 23 times in 2002 we carried information on the Chehalis Tribe and Lucky Eagle Casino plans to raise Anderson Road. Today The Olympian reports on what is now called a facelift to keep the road above water. This road project is funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Thurston and Grays Harbor counties are not participating in this project.
  •  Feb. 02, 2003 The Aberdeen Daily World reports a casino closed by recent minor rain event.
  •  Feb. 02, 2003 A relatively light rainfall event seems comparable to a significant December 2001 flood event. The impact along Highway 12 in Thurston/Grays Harbor county seems the same.
  •  Feb. 01, 2003 The Chronicle reports that a record 1.68 inches of rain fell in Centralia between 4 p.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Friday, resulting in rising river banks and flooded roads, especially in east Lewis County.
  •  Dec. 26, 2002 Interested in what can be done with no oversight from the State of Wa. or Grays Harbor County? Here is an example of that along with flood plain filling.
  •  Dec. 15, 2002 The Chronicle reports that our local rivers are rising at last!
  •  Dec. 11, 2002 The Chronicle reports that flood guages will receive operating funds.
  •  Dec. 09, 2002 Along Hwy 12 (Oakville area) a minor flood (in 1991) led to this flood story. The story came to light as local folks discuss the fate of a service station in the exact same area.
  •  Nov. 17, 2002 Here it is: first flood warning but only for a portion of Grays Harbor County. This notification came via an online, free, subscription service: My-cast.com It might be worth a try.
  •  Nov. 01, 2002 The Chronicle encourages residents and local officials to stay alert, expect anything and be prepared as best as possible for any possible floods.
  •  Oct. 29, 2002 Now The Chronicle reports the NWS is forecasting a lower chance of flooding this year. Plus you can read about the dikes.
  •  Oct. 28, 2002 The Skagit Valley Herald reports that the Burlington City Council approved interim restrictions Thursday night that would prohibit all new large-scale development within 600 feet of the dikes along a two-mile stretch between the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway bridge and Burlington's western city limits.
  •  Oct. 13, 2002 The Chronicle reports that Independence Road and surrounding areas are severely impacted by flooding issues, the Army Corps of Engineers was brought in to analyze the situation, they came up with a proposal to armor 1,000 feet of the river, but the cost would be over $1 million.
  •  Sep. 26, 2002 The Chronicle editorial identifies the importance and costs of maintaining flood dikes and levees.
  •  Sep. 21, 2002 The Chronicle reports that officials take a quick inspection of the dikes and levees already in the Twin Cities area. Some concerns are voiced.

  •  Jun. 29, 2002 And they said it couldn't be done. A service station on Anderson Road. This service station is planned for tribal trust land adjacent to Anderson Road. The tribe wants to raise Anderson Road to improve access to the casino. This service station will help force the issue.
  •  Jun. 29, 2002 As if flooding isn't bad enough, this The Olympian article, reports that vandals destroyed Satsop flood guage.
  •  Jun. 27, 2002 Once again the Chehalis Tribe Anderson Road floodplain modification hearing is up in the air - check with Thurston County for more information.
  •  Jun. 25, 2002 Thurston County is handling a Hearing dealing with the Shoreline Substantial Dev. Permit by the Chehalis Tribe to widen anderson Road and excavate 16,300 cy of gravel for fill and to add floodwater water storage.
  •  Jun. 08, 2002Flood control, the area's hottest issue, will be the topic when citizens gather on June 13 in the Chehalis River Basin at the Montesano City Hall. Experts from the Corps and Lewis County will be on hand to present a project overview and to answer questions on environmental impact, water issues, level of protection, cost estimate and geographical areas of concern.
  •  Jun. 02, 2002 Once again the tribal modifications to Anderson Road have gone to the two major counties involved. Thurston County has issued a mitigated (air quality, erosion and storm water drainages (during project time only), wetland mitigation and debris disposal) determination of non-significance (MDNS) for the major modification of a road in the floodplain.
  •  Jun. 02, 2002 Thurston County has issued one MDNS on this Anderson Road project. Now Grays Harbor County sends notice of application and public hearing for a shorelines substantial development with conditional use and flood development permit. Are you confused? We are.
  •  May. 16, 2002 As reported by The Chronicle, the Centralia City Council approves interlocal flood control agreements.
