WATER QUALITY A JUNE DOUBLE HEADER

The Chehalis River Council, in response to recent interest and pressures on water quality issues, has scheduled two free public seminars this month. If you are interested in clean water, you should attend!

Both seminars take place in the Upper Chehalis Basin, but the topics are relative to everyone living in the basin. What happens in the upper basin has an impact upon everyone.

On June 12, starting at 7:00 p.m., at Centralia High School, the CRC is sponsoring a meeting and workshop to address nonpoint pollution in the Upper Chehalis River Basin. This nonpoint (diffuse) pollution contributes up to 50% of the contaminants found in the Chehalis River system.

At this meeting Washington Department of Ecology (DOE) will present a strategy for controlling nonpoint sources of pollution. This strategy will describe what DOE will be doing over the next 4 years to eliminate the pollution caused by runoff from large scale livestock operations. That runoff is the largest nonpoint source of pollution as identified in the water quality studies. The workshop will also address what must be done to control many smaller nonpoint sources that, when combined, create a serious source of pollution.

June 19, starting at 7:00 p.m., at Swede Hall in Rochester, the CRC is sponsoring a public meeting on the Washington Growth Management Act (GMA). The GMA is a state plan to provide a discipline that encourages and forces local planning to deal with the issues of growth. The GMA has come under attack by many elected officials, local organizations and residents.

This meeting is a chance for the public to listen to an expert on the GMA. Michael Grady, Senior Planner, Washinton Department of Community Trade and Economic Development will be the guest speaker. Michael will explain the link between GMA, capital (money), land use, and utility plans. Is there a need to have a sewage treatment plan before growth happens? Is there a need to place industrial development away from aquifers? Do wetlands - currently dry or wet - play a role in water quality or flood mitigation? Since the Chehalis River Basin includes parts of 5 counties successful implementation of the GMA is key to long term water quality and availability throughout the basin.

Both seminars are free. Both seminars are open to the public. Both focus on your water quality!
