December 2000 Despite the year end, December 2000 wasn't quiet, water related issues included: numerous logging applications, more docks in Ocean Shores, a Lewis County change to the county code, the Chehalis Basin Partnership (CBP) is dealing with water quantity issues and aslate of flood control proposals, an appeal against the Department of Ecology (DOE ), a proposed rule that will describe how Ecology administers water rights.information, a regional solution for a wastewater treatment plant, a contaminated well in Tumwater tests clean, public outreach on two current projects, a plan to clean up a contaminated site in Chehalis, and DOE is proposing: new criteria . for temperature, dissolved oxygen and bacteria; a water quality antidegradation plan; and a new look for our state's standards November 2000 In November the issues and news dealt with: a $15,000 grant from the Department of Ecology, a 1,290 acre development in the Onalaska area, substantial upgrade to Chehalis water and sewer systems, Pacific International Engineering reviewed Centralia- Chehalis flood solutions, a landmark agreement to improve water quality, contamination related to the brownfield in Junction City, WaDOE's purchase of water rights, basic training on water quality and monitoring, FEMA has a tutorial: How to Read a Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), and Why Do (or Don't) Local Government Officials Participate in Watershed Planning Efforts?

August 2000 August news includes: ounty Commissioners and other Grays Harbor County officials have made it clear they do not want proposed amendments to to shoreline rules, info on floodplain acquisition, floodplain easements and a erosion hazards, new thoughts on droughts, floods and suburban sprawl,an overview of the final national TMDL rule, local residents have organized a flood infromation meeting, Pacific International Engineering (PIE) opening new office in Olympia, Lincoln Creek oil spill accident results in a $5,000 fine, EPA has released a fact sheet for Hamilton-Labree Roads superfund site, the Chehalis Tribe has $2.5 million for two bridge project on Anderson road, Violet Meadows Estate (Rochester) residents have contaminated water, Lewis County will appeal a state hearings board ruling, Wildlife Forever of Grays Harbor has pursued an objection related to logging and converting sites in Ocosta, Washington Water Weeks has something for everyone with events through Oct. 15, The Chehalis Basin Partnership SRFB process can continue and the federal government may spend millions of dollars cleaning up contaminated ground water south of Chehalis. July 2000 July was a month filled with news on water issues. Included were items on topics such as: protests of the DOE's proposed shoreline rules, sale of 70 million gallons of water per year to a power company, water reuse funding, processing of SRFB applications stopped by lack of consensus, data and procedures for computing flood flow, state water storage issues, $89 million being provided to improve and protect water quality, flooding and water quality issues are the subject of two recent petitions against Lewis County GMA plan, cities of Chehalis and Oakville published 2000 Annual Water Quality report, $3.3 million in federal funding for energy and water projects in Southwest Washington, Fecal Coliform TMDL strudy of the Grays Harbor and the tributaries to the harbor, Centralia's wastewater treatment plant is on track, an end to the flooding problems in south Chehalis is not near, and state hearings board has declared invalid key portions of Lewis County's comprehensive plan
June 2000 June was an active month and stories covered: a new draft of proposed shoreline guidelines, Grays Harbor County taken to court for a second time over over gravel pit decision, 500 stormwater permit holders (a potential source of nonpoint pollution) are receiving notices about their permit status, Chehalis River cleanup, Grays Harbor Commissioner strongly opposed to new shorelines rules, water treatment decision is deferred, a series of dikes and berms to collect and treat surface water runoff prior to discharge into Hanaford Creek, hanging cables over potentially unstable slopes, and create bio swales for drainage and to protect wetland - all this in the Chehalis Watershed, and well drillers are advised to proceed with caution before drilling May 2000 A lot of interesting topics including: cleaning up Lincoln Creek oil spill will be expensive,computer model helps illustrate water movement through soils, culvert replacement and gravel extraction, salmon habitat restoration funds available, contaminated well is found in the area of a Lewis County Shop, Tenino residents are suing drinking water provider, the availability of a flood fact sheet, information on flood mapping needs across the nation, which waterways in the Chehalis Watershed don't meet water quality standards, new and revised Nationwide Permits (NWPs) issued by the Corps of Engineers (Corps)
April 2000 This month the topics include: As dairy shuts down other uses of the land raise concerns, the year 2000 most endangered U.S. rivers,. Lincoln Creek oil spill, a lawsuit (Clean Water Act) against the City of Chehalis because of treatment plant violations, the state's highest levels of perchloroethylene contamination here in Lewis County, adding Hamilton - Labree site to Superfund National Priorities List, .Ecology seeks input on which polluted waterways to clean up, Onalaska High School has an excellent science and environmental program, another Tumwater well south and west of the airport is contaminated and out of service and finally a whooping good time for all! March 2000 Someof the topics included: A live video program on the status of the national drought, Tractebel wants permit modifications approved, another Corps Reform update including info on the Corp's boondoggles, disposal of sewage sludge, Friends of Puget Prairies is looking for participants, Tenino is seeking to establish a city sewer system, a rule revision to give people better guidance on how to effectively and efficiently meter or measure water use, USGS warning of severe drought in wide area of United States, a 'draft' study of fecal coliform in Grays Harbor, wastewater discharge general permit for dairy farms, a press release which indicates that for 1998, 312 companies reported releasing a total of 22.8 million pounds of toxic chemicals into the air, 4.28 million pounds onto the land, and 3.5 million pounds into the water.
February 2000 March was full of news. Among the items were: Support in holding federal agencies accountable to water pollution laws, exit 72 near Chehalis draws concerns about flooding from WaDOE, does the U.S. Corps of Engineers illegally manipulate economic data, Thurston County Commissioners ban building in flood prone areas, FOGH and the City of Aberdeen have reached a tentative agreement, Governor Locke is pushing legislative leaders to solve water issues, a judge has ruled that Washington must do a better job of water monitoring, a meeting on Interstate 5 plans and flooding, Black River wildlife acquisitions are stalled and WaDOE has posted a Water Resources Vision January 2000 The first month of 2000 provided a lot of news. Among the issues were: WEC helps win legal victories for fish, 400,000 cubic yards of fill in the Chehalis River floodplain, water rate increases , news related to flood mapping issues, Family Forest Conservation Project, shoreline management and the salmon problem, Centralia City Council decides 400,000 cubic yards of fill won't make floodling worse, Aberdeen's sewer system and the Stafford Creek Correctional Center, WaDOE sweeps Chehalis site for toxic chemicals andThurston County views planned port development of Salmon Creek flood area differently
